Evolution of early contact lens

Leonardo Da Vinci is credited with the idea of contact lenses in 1508. He stated that corneal power can be directly altered by submerging the eye in a bowl of water. A century later René Descartes proposed an idea in which a liquid filled glass tube is placed in direct contact with the cornea. The end farther from the eye composed of clear glass was designed to correct vision. In the early 19th century Thomas Young made contact lenses based on the Descartes’ model. Using wax to affix water-filled lenses, he corrected it with another pair of lenses. None of the above methods were intended to correct refraction errors. Dr. Dallos with Istvan Komàromy in the year1929, made molds from living eyes enabling the manufacture of lenses that conformed to the actual shape of the eye for the first time. Adolf Gaston a German ophthalmologist was the first to construct and fit a contact lens successfully. Initially he tried it on rabbits, himself and lastly on a small group of volunteers. His lenses made from heavy blown glass and the space between cornea and glass was filled with a dextrose solution. Until 1930’s Glass-blown scleral lenses remained the only form of contact lens. After that PMMA or Perspex was developed, allowing plastic scleral lenses instead of glass blown ones to be manufactured for the first time. These plastic lenses, actually a combination of plastic and glass were much lighter than the glass-blown scleral lenses. In 1949 the first corneal lenses, smaller than the original scleral lenses, were developed. These sat only on the cornea rather than the entire visible ocular surface. It could be worn for as long as sixteen hours at a stretch.                      

The First contact lens

 PMMA the first contact lenses during the 1960s became more sophisticated with improving technology. The major disadvantage of these lenses was they inhibited oxygen transmission through the lens to the cornea causing adverse clinical effects. During the last three decades a range of oxygen-permeable materials were developed to overcome this problem and it was Norman Gaylord who played a major role in development of these polymers referred to as rigid gas permeable lenses 

The First Soft lens

Otto Wichterle and Drahoslav Lim undertook research in biological use of Hydrophilic gels and their work led to the launch of the first hydrogel or soft lens in some countries in the 1960s. A decade later the United States Food and Drug Administration approved soft lens. Gradually there was more soft lens prescribed, mainly due to the comfort factor of soft lenses rather than rigid lenses which take some time to get adapted to. During the recent years soft lenses manufactured improved in terms of increasing the oxygen permeability and the first disposable soft contact lenses was made.

The Silicone Hydrogel

The first silicone hydrogel was manufactured in 1998. The advantage of this material was its extremely high oxygen permeability without sacrificing the comfort and performance of the conventional hydrogels which had been in use for the previous three decades.

Caring for contact lens

There many care system or lens solutions that are used to clean contact lenses. Multipurpose solutions are the mostly used for disinfecting, cleaning, and storing soft lenses. Hydrogen peroxide also can be used to clean and disinfect contact lenses but must be rinsed away with saline before the lenses may be worn. When Hydrogen Peroxide comes in contact with the eye it can be very painful and irritating. Enzymatic cleaner, typically in tablet form, can be used weekly for cleaning protein deposits off lenses. Also there are ultraviolet or ultrasonic devices available in some electro-domestic stores that are used to disinfect and clean contact lenses. These lenses are placed inside the ultrasonic device for up to 5 minutes during which the microorganisms and protein build-up are cleaned.
